Jakarta (ANTARA) - PT Pertamina Geothermal Energy Tbk (PGE) is strengthening the integration of energy efficiency and emission reductions across all business lines and operations, which forms part of the company’s implementation of sustainable operations.

PGE Operations Director Andi Joko Nugroho, in a statement in Jakarta on Thursday, said that the consistent application of sustainability practices is an important component in ensuring reliable, efficient, and competitive geothermal development.

“Geothermal development does not only focus on providing clean energy. PGE also ensures that all operations are conducted responsibly, efficiently, and provide sustainable benefits for both the environment and surrounding communities,” said Andi.

He added that all of the company’s sustainability implementations are carried out transparently, referring to global reporting standards.

Based on the 2025 Sustainability Report, PGE recorded energy savings of 90,502.28 MWh throughout the previous year, a significant increase compared to 40,058.77 MWh in the previous year.

This efficiency improvement was driven by various operational optimisations in several geothermal working areas (WKPs), including debottlenecking the production line in the Ulubelu area, which allows low-pressure wells to enter the production system, optimisation of vacuum pump operations in the gas extraction system at all PGE geothermal power plants (PLTPs) to reduce own use, and modification of the hand control valve at Lumut Balai to minimise steam wasted to the rock muffler.

In addition, Andi said the company is also continuing to promote various energy efficiency and emission reduction innovations, including the utilisation of renewable energy for internal operational needs, such as the use of solar power plants (PLTS) in operational facilities and offices.

On the other hand, PGE recorded an energy intensity ratio of 0.037 MWh/MWh in 2025, or a decrease of 10.10 percent compared to the previous year.

Meanwhile, the use of renewable energy in operations remained high at 94.36 percent.

From the emission management perspective, PGE’s emission intensity was recorded at 41.12 g CO2e/kWh, still well below the EU Taxonomy and Indonesia’s Sustainable Finance Taxonomy threshold of 100 g CO2e/kWh.

At the same time, PGE’s geothermal operational capacity contributed to avoiding emissions of more than 4.29 million tonnes of CO2e in 2025.

PGE is also continuing to strengthen the sustainable management of non-hazardous and non-toxic waste (non-B3) through a 4R approach (reduce, reuse, recycle, recovery).

In 2025, the volume of non-B3 waste successfully managed through this approach reached 17 tonnes, an increase of 24.5 percent compared to 13.66 tonnes in 2024.

In addition, PGE is continuing to open opportunities for developing the utilisation of geothermal energy for other green industrial needs, including the development of green data centres based on clean, low-emission energy.
