PGE Sets Sights on Becoming World's Largest Geothermal Company

PT Pertamina Geothermal Energy Tbk (PGE) has set a target to become the world’s largest geothermal company by installed capacity. The company’s Director of Exploration and Development, Edwil Suzandi, stated that as part of its long-term strategy, PGE is aiming for a total power generation capacity of 3 gigawatts (GW). “Our vision is to become number one in the world, the company with the largest installed capacity globally, at 3 Gigawatt,” Edwil said during an interview on CNBC Indonesia’s Energy Corner programme in Jakarta.

Currently, PGE operates a total installed geothermal capacity of 727 megawatts (MW). To achieve its ambitious target, the company is preparing several new projects. One project, currently under discussion with PT PLN (Persero), is expected to reach an agreement soon and will add approximately 45 MW of capacity, with operations targeted before 2029.

In addition, PGE is advancing the development of the Lumut Balai Unit 3 geothermal power plant with a capacity of 55 MW, which will be followed by the development of Lumut Balai Unit 4. The company is also jointly preparing the Hulu Lais Unit 1 and Unit 2 projects with PLN, which will have a combined capacity of around 110 MW, with each unit contributing 55 MW. Edwil emphasised that these projects represent Pertamina’s commitment to supporting the nation’s green energy transition.
