PGE Ready to Accelerate Geothermal Energy for Green Data Centres
PT Pertamina Geothermal Energy (PGE) is ready to accelerate the potential utilisation of geothermal energy in the development of green data centres in Indonesia. “We are working on this; it is one of our efforts to accelerate geothermal potential. So we are not entering the data centre business, but we are supporting it from the energy side,” said PGE President Director Ahmad Yani during a media gathering in Jakarta on Tuesday. He added that developing geothermal-based data centres is a strategic step to deliver efficient, reliable, and low-emission digital infrastructure, while strengthening Indonesia’s position in the global digital economy. Through this initiative, PGE is taking a greater role in ensuring the acceleration of national digital transformation aligns with the commitment towards a low-carbon economy. “Clean geothermal energy can be utilised for data centre development, to support data centres. We already know that geothermal is baseload green energy, which can work very well with the future data centre business that focuses on green energy,” said Ahmad Yani. Citing PGE records, based on projected growth in industrial electricity consumption, nearly 26 percent is driven by data centre growth. National data centre capacity is projected to rise from 520 megawatts (MW) in 2025 to 1.8 gigawatts (GW) by 2030. This opens opportunities for PGE to become more involved in the low-carbon digital sector and ensure that Indonesia’s digital growth is built responsibly and sustainably. Ahmad Yani also stated that the company is open to discussions with data centre sector players interested in the potential of geothermal utilisation and the development of a green data centre ecosystem. “We are open; all data centre companies that favour green energy will certainly meet with us. We are open to all existing companies for cooperation and opportunities. We will also discuss how we build the ecosystem,” said Ahmad Yani. “We are convincing parties that we can support green baseload energy, so that an ecosystem will be formed. We are creating a data centre ecosystem that can support green energy from geothermal,” he added.
