PGE partners with Unila academics to study seismic activity in Ulubelu
PT Pertamina Geothermal Energy Tbk (PGE) (IDX: PGEO) Ulubelu Area is collaborating with independent academics from the University of Lampung (Unila) to conduct a scientific study on microseismic activity that has recently been increasingly felt by communities in the Ulubelu area and its surroundings.
This step represents PGE’s commitment to supporting disaster risk mitigation through a science-based approach and to strengthening understanding of the geological characteristics in the Tanggamus Regency, an area known for its complex tectonic and volcanic conditions, according to PGE Ulubelu Area General Manager Edy Sudarmadi.
The collaboration follows a visit by a University of Lampung academic team to the PGE Ulubelu Area operational site in May 2026. During that occasion, the researchers presented findings already published in an international journal regarding the regional geological conditions and seismic activity in the Ulubelu area.
Edy Sudarmadi stated that the company fully supports the implementation of this independent research as a form of corporate responsibility to the community and all stakeholders. “PGE is committed to supporting the implementation of scientific studies that are objective, independent, and transparent,” he said, expressing hope that the research will provide clear, measurable, and data-based information to support future disaster risk mitigation.
Professor Ahmad Zaenudin from the University of Lampung’s Faculty of Engineering explained that the seismic phenomena in Ulubelu need to be thoroughly researched by considering various regional geological aspects that influence subsurface dynamics. He noted that the study is important for obtaining accurate data on the source and characteristics of earthquake activity in Ulubelu. The research also needs to consider the area’s geological history, including the long-term influence of the 1994 Liwa earthquake, which remains an important reference in seismic studies across the western Lampung region.
