PT Pertamina Geothermal Energy Tbk (PGE) has stated that its future focus is ensuring geothermal resource potential can be converted into technically, economically, and sustainably viable projects. With a large resource portfolio, a mature project pipeline, and disciplined execution, PGE is optimistic about achieving its capacity growth targets, according to Director of Exploration and Development Edwil Suzandi in Jakarta on Tuesday. This aligns with the momentum of a century of geothermal development in Indonesia, since exploration first began in Kamojang, West Java, in 1926. As a company whose working areas contribute around 70 per cent of the national installed geothermal capacity, PGE is committed to using this centennial milestone as a launch point to strengthen Indonesia’s role as a leading global geothermal producer. Edwil noted that the government’s policy direction through PLN’s 2025-2034 Electricity Supply Business Plan, which targets an additional 5.2 gigawatts of geothermal capacity, opens opportunities to accelerate sector development. PGE currently manages 15 Geothermal Working Areas with a total installed capacity of 1,932 megawatts, comprising 727 MW operated directly by PGE and 1,205 MW through Joint Operation Contract schemes. Three of PGE’s strategic projects—Lumut Balai Unit 3 (55 MW), Lumut Balai Unit 4 (55 MW), and Lahendong Unit 7 and 8 (50 MW)—have been included in the Ministry of National Development Planning’s Green Book 2026. This status opens opportunities for access to international funding to support accelerated project development. Throughout the first half of this year, the company is focusing on four main pillars: commercial readiness, subsurface readiness, execution readiness, and project funding, to ensure every project runs optimally and sustainably.
