PGE CEO and Strategy to Harness 40% of World's Geothermal Potential in Indonesia

Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia - At the 2026 Indonesia International Geothermal Convention & Exhibition (IIGCE), President Director of PT Pertamina Geothermal Energy Tbk, Ahmad Yani, highlighted the importance of the geothermal sector in supporting national energy security and the energy transition.

Amid global geopolitical turmoil and an uncertain crisis situation, Indonesia is ensuring that the resilience of its national energy sector remains strong. However, efforts are needed to maintain domestic energy resilience through the development of new and renewable energy, one of which is the geothermal sector.

Indonesia possesses 40% of the world’s geothermal potential, amounting to nearly 24,000 Megawatts, presenting an opportunity for the country to utilise Geothermal Power Plants to accelerate the energy transition and achieve energy independence.

Indonesia has currently only utilised 11% of its geothermal potential, requiring efforts to accelerate geothermal power development by creating a business climate that is increasingly feasible and bankable. PGE is currently targeting an increase in geothermal power capacity to 1.8 GW by 2034, while also exploring new business opportunities from the geothermal supply chain, including green hydrogen projects and the development of Canaya coffee and green industry.

PGE also aims for geothermal projects to have a positive impact on communities through job creation and stimulating the local economy. PGE is further exploring new business opportunities from the geothermal supply chain, one of which is through green hydrogen projects.
