2026 marks 100 years of geothermal energy development in Indonesia, which began with the Kamojang Geothermal Power Plant (PLTP) in 1926. As the country with the largest geothermal potential in the world, reaching up to 24,000 Megawatts (MW), Indonesia is described by PT Pertamina Geothermal Energy Tbk President Director Ahmad Yani as a ‘centre of excellence’ for geothermal. Currently, installed PLTP capacity has only reached 2.7 Gigawatts, with a target of reaching 5.2 GW by 2034, so the opportunity for geothermal industry development is very large to strengthen energy security and sovereignty while supporting the acceleration of the energy transition.

Indonesia has only utilised 11% of its geothermal potential, so in an effort to accelerate PLTP development, it is necessary to create a geothermal business climate that is ‘feasible’ and ‘bankable’. Therefore, PGE continues to strive to increase geothermal capacity with a target of 1 GW capacity in 2028, making it the largest in Indonesia, and by 2034 targeting a capacity of 1.8 GW, making it the largest in the world.

PGE also targets geothermal projects to have a positive impact on communities through job absorption and growing the surrounding economy. PGE is also exploring new business opportunities from the geothermal supply chain, one of which is through green hydrogen projects.
