PGA Reports Marapi Eruption Recorded on Seismograph at 21.6 Millimetres
Padang (ANTARA) - The Mount Marapi Volcano Observatory (PGA) reported that the eruption of the volcano, located in Agam Regency and Tanah Datar Regency, West Sumatra Province, was recorded on the seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 21.6 millimetres.
“An eruption of Mount Marapi occurred on Thursday, 26 March 2026, at 08:28 WIB, lasting 27.4 seconds,” said PGA officer Teguh Firmansyah in Padang on Thursday.
The Centre for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) has issued several recommendations for the public to follow.
First, prohibiting anyone from engaging in activities within a three-kilometre radius of the volcano’s activity centre (Verbeek Crater). Second, PVMBG also reminds of the potential threat of cold lava flows, particularly for communities living along rivers originating from the volcano’s peak. This condition could occur during rain or the rainy season.
Furthermore, if ash rain occurs, the public is urged to use masks to cover their nose and mouth to avoid respiratory tract disturbances. Other recommendations include asking all parties to maintain a conducive atmosphere and not to spread false narratives.
