Pezeshkian: UN must fulfil its mission to prevent war

Bishkek (ANTARA) - Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has stated that the United Nations (UN) must carry out its mission to prevent war and promote the peaceful resolution of conflicts.

Speaking during the SCO+ meeting, held as part of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, on Tuesday, Pezeshkian emphasised that Iran does not view the UN as an institution relevant only to a specific historical era, but rather one that must continue to evolve.

“The UN must evolve into an institution that more accurately reflects the realities of the new world and is more capable of effectively fulfilling its primary mission, namely maintaining international peace and security, preventing war, and resolving conflicts peacefully,” said Pehenskian.

“All of this [current events] constitutes a clear violation of the UN Charter and the fundamental principles of international law. The question arises: if the international community fails to respond to such actions, which nation can still be confident that its sovereignty and security will be protected from the use of force?” Pezeshkian added.

The Iranian President also questioned the rationale of various countries that continue to trust international mechanisms for inspecting nuclear facilities if those very facilities are instead targeted by attacks.
