Pezeshkian tells Pope: Iran remains committed to diplomacy and peaceful solutions

Istanbul (ANTARA) - Iran remains committed to diplomacy and peaceful solutions, President Masoud Pezeshkian said in a message to Pope Leo XIV, according to Iranian state media reports on Saturday.

Pezeshkian also conveyed Tehran’s appreciation for the moral and logical stance shown by the Catholic leader regarding the recent military aggression against Iran, according to the IRNA news agency.

Iran targeted US and Israeli assets within the framework of legitimate self-defence, the Iranian president said, while calling on the international community to act responsibly against the US’s illegal actions.

Tensions in the region have escalated since the US and Israel launched attacks against Iran on February 28. In response, Tehran launched retaliatory attacks targeting Israel as well as US allies in the Gulf region, accompanied by the closure of the Strait of Hormuz.

A ceasefire came into effect on April 8 through mediation by Pakistan, but negotiations in Islamabad failed to produce a permanent agreement. US President Donald Trump then extended the ceasefire indefinitely.
