Pezeshkian Says Iran Will Act Within the NPT Framework
Tehran (ANTARA) – Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has affirmed that his country intends to act within the framework of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) and is not seeking to obtain nuclear weapons.
“The Islamic Republic of Iran is not seeking to obtain nuclear weapons and, as an NPT member, supports the continuation of nuclear activities in accordance with international law and treaties,” Pezeshkian said, according to a statement from the Iranian President’s Office.
He added that Iran retains the right to pursue peaceful nuclear activities.
Pezeshkian made the remarks during a meeting with representatives of the Mecca alliance, including Saudi Defence Minister Khalid bin Salman, Pakistan Army Chief Asim Munir, and Türkiye’s intelligence chief, Ibrahim Kalin. Supreme National Security Council Secretary Mohsen Rezaei also attended the meeting with Pezeshkian.
Under the document, an armed attack against any one of the participating countries is considered an attack against all three.
The talks took place amid a series of attacks on Saudi Arabia by Yemen’s Ansar Allah movement, also known as the Houthis.
They also coincided with a statement from Iran, which is regarded as an ally of the Houthis, expressing its readiness to help resolve the conflict.
