KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia's national oil company Petronas has been awarded a petroleum exploration block in Sudan, its eighth in the African country.
Petronas will hold a 77 percent interest in the block through Petronas Carigali Overseas while the remaining equity is shared between Sudan's national oil company Sudapet (15 percent) and High Tech Group (eight percent), a Sudanese company.
Petronas Carigali Overseas and Sudapet will jointly operate the block, the Bernama news agency said.
The onshore Block 8 covers an area of 65,856 square kilometers within the Blue Nile Basin, northeast of Sudan's Melut Basin.
Apart from Block 8, Petronas already has interests in Blocks 1, 2 and 4; Blocks 3 and 7; Block 5A and Block 5B in Sudan. --AFP
