Petrol and Airfares Drive Inflation in May 2026
The Indonesian Central Statistics Agency (BPS), through the Deputy for Methodology and Statistical Information, Pudji Ismartini, reported that annual inflation stood at 3.08 per cent year-on-year (yoy) in May 2026. On a month-to-month (mtm) basis, inflation for May 2026 was recorded at 0.28 per cent, with the Consumer Price Index (CPI) rising from 111.09 in April 2026 to 111.40 in May 2026.
Detailing the transport sector, Ismartini noted that several commodities were dominant drivers of inflation. “Within the transport group, the commodities that predominantly drove inflation were petrol and airfares, each contributing an inflationary share of 0.02 per cent,” Ismartuna stated during a press teleconference on Tuesday, 2 June 2026.
She added that BPS also noted several commodities acting as deflationary buffers, such as broiler chicken, chicken eggs, and garlic.
Looking at specific components, Ismartini stated that all components experienced monthly inflation in May 2026. The highest inflationary contribution came from the core component, which provided an inflationary share of 0.14 per cent with an inflation rate of 0.22 per cent. Dominant commodities in this group included cooking oil, mobile phones, laptops/notebooks, lubricants/engine oil, rice with side dishes, and maintenance/servicing.
Regarding government-regulated price components, BPS recorded an inflationary contribution of 0.10 per cent, with an inflation rate of 0.52 per cent. This group was primarily driven by price increases in household fuels, petrol, airfares, Machine-Rolled Clove Cigarettes (SKM), and diesel.
Furthermore, volatile components contributed an inflationary share of 0.04 per cent, with an inflation rate of 0.22 per cent. The dominant commodities in this category were red chillies, shallots, tomatoes, rice, and mustard greens.
