Pete Hegseth: US Cannot Sustain Economy Without Military Superiority

Washington — The United States will be unable to maintain its economic stability without preserving its military superiority. This view was expressed by US Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth in an opinion piece published in the New York Post on Tuesday (23/06/2025).

“If America loses its unquestionable military advantage, then no amount of fiscal savings will be able to maintain the economic health of this nation,” Hegseth wrote in his opinion piece.

He emphasised that for decades, the Pentagon has underpinned US prosperity, ranging from supporting the dominance of the dollar to protecting global trade. According to Hegseth, the world’s greatest military power provides stability, predictability, and almost limitless economic advantages for the US.

He explained that military dominance allows Washington to borrow funds on favourable terms, trade freely, and establish international trade rules. Without such an advantage, Hegseth believes that markets, investment, and jobs in the US could be threatened by instability.

“The greatest threat to America’s national security today is the lack of investment in military spending,” Hegseth stated.
