Perumka tenders 48 projects on express train

JAKARTA (JP): The state railway company Perusahaan Umum Kereta
Api (Perumka) is inviting private companies to cooperate in 48
projects for express train operation and land development.

Perumka's new president, Soemino Eko Saputro, told reporters
after his installation ceremony yesterday that four private
companies have proposed establishing join operations of express
trains in Java.

"The proposals are still being studied," said Soemino, who
replaced Anwar Suprijadi.

Besides Soemino, Minister of Transportation Haryanto
Dhanutirto installed Edy Haryoto, Sjahedi Junardiono, Widjanarko
and Sumiarso Sonny, respectively, as Perumka's directors of
finance, technical affairs, operation and general affairs.

The minister also installed Darius Djana as president and
Sodin Sjafrudin as operational director of PT Damri, a bus
transportation company. Sri Tidarno, Djaman S. Ginting and Ahmad
Muchlasin were sworn in, respectively, as Damri's directors of
finance, technical affairs and general affairs.

Soemino, who wouldn't name the four proposing companies, said
that the planned projects include trains that will serve the
Jakarta-Merak (West Java), Jakarta-Yogyakarta, Jakarta-Surabaya
(East Java), and Jakarta-Bandung-Sukabumi (West Java) routes.

Perumka plans to launch at least three express trains in
August to coincide with the commemoration of the country's 50th
independence anniversary. The three trains will include the
JS950, which will link Jakarta and Surabaya in nine hours, the
JB250 linking Jakarta and Bandung in two hours, and the JY650
linking Jakarta and Yogyakarta in six hours.

A spokesman for the Ministry of Transportation said that PT
Lorinta Mitra Guna, PT Arion Paramita or PT Marga Mandala Sakti
will likely run the express trains in cooperation with Perumka,
under joint operation arrangements.

"Lorinta is interested in the Jakarta-Bandung route, Marga in
the Jakarta-Merak route and Arion in the Jakarta-Solo (Central
Java) route," the spokesman said. "Another, private company, PT
Mitra Guna Tribakti, proposes to provide a cement railway service
in Gresik of East Java."

Land

He said that out of the 48 offered projects, 32 are railway
services while the others are for land development.

He explained that Perumka wants some of its land in Jakarta,
Bandung, Surabaya and Medan in North Sumatra to be developed by
private companies into office buildings, hotels, shop-houses and
other business facilities.

In Jakarta, for instance, Perumka owns a 10-hectare plot in
Kampung Bandan Baru of North Jakarta, on which PT Bakti Bangun
Era Cipta has proposed to develop a shopping mall and hotel
complex.

Two private companies in Surabaya, including PT Tirtamaya
Subur and PT Grahaniaga Jayautama, have also proposed developing
Perumka's plots of land, each with a width of 1.8 hectares and
7.3 hectares, as office buildings and shop-houses.(icn)
