PT Pertamina (Persero) is accelerating the development of a hydrogen ecosystem as a new alternative domestic fuel. The company is working on a number of pilot projects, from developing hydrogen hubs to hydrogen mobility, essentially hydrogen refuelling stations, in various regions across Indonesia.

Pertamina’s Vice President Director, Oki Muraza, explained that the company is currently running several hydrogen-based pilot projects. He detailed that the development of hydrogen infrastructure is being carried out in stages, starting from Sumatra Island to Java Island.

“From the north of Sumatra Island, we are developing a hydrogen hub in Sei Mangkei and Kuala Tanjung with a capacity of 4,000 kg per day,” Oki explained at the Global Hydrogen Ecosystem Summit and Exhibition (GHES) 2026 in Jakarta on Tuesday.

In South Sumatra, the company is running a pilot project for hydrogen sourced from solar power in Plaju with a capacity of 20 kg per day. Meanwhile, in Lampung, Pertamina is preparing to inaugurate a hydrogen facility sourced from geothermal energy with a capacity of 100 kilograms per day this November.

“Then moving to Java Island, in Jakarta we are developing a hydrogen mobility ecosystem together with PLN and other ecosystem partners,” Oki said. The company is also receiving support from Korea to strengthen the hydrogen ecosystem in West Java as part of the national energy transition goals.

Oki affirmed the company’s readiness to support four main aspects: regulation, technology, financing, and infrastructure development. “For infrastructure, we certainly want to share infrastructure and facilities with other national assets, such as with Mr. Darmawan at PLN, so that we can make production more economical,” he stated.

Based on Pertamina’s presentation, there are seven strategic hydrogen-related projects being planned. The total production capacity for blue hydrogen and ammonia is targeted to reach 18 tonnes per day by 2031. The projects include a green hydrogen facility from geothermal energy in Ulubelu, Lampung (2026), a clean hydrogen project from solar power at RU III Plaju, South Sumatra (2027), a blue hydrogen hub in Sei Mangkei, North Sumatra (3.9 tonnes/day), a large-scale blue hydrogen hub in Kuala Tanjung, North Sumatra (14.5 tonnes/day), a hydrogen refuelling station for vehicles in Jakarta (2028), natural hydrogen exploration research in Sulawesi, and blue ammonia production in Bintuni, Papua (2,500 tonnes/day by 2031).
