Pertamina's GreenBus Invites Young Generation to Learn from Green Village

Pertamina, through its GreenBus Pertamina 2026 programme, is involving the community, especially the younger generation, in adopting a more environmentally friendly lifestyle. The GreenBus Pertamina programme recently visited Kampung Hijau Gang Cemara in North Jakarta, a Pertamina-supported CSR programme area that has successfully transformed a dense and slum-ridden environment into a productive green space. At this location, participants were introduced to various innovations in waste management, urban farming, and food security, all managed jointly with the community. Yasser, a GreenBus Pertamina participant representing SMA Negeri 3 Jakarta, admitted he initially thought that areas on the outskirts of Jakarta had low environmental awareness. However, after seeing it firsthand, that assumption changed. ‘I am actually pleased to see that the community here has extraordinary concern for the environment, in my opinion, it is even more palpable than in some areas of the city centre,’ Yasser said. During the GreenBus Pertamina programme, Yasser learned to process organic waste into fish feed, got to know urban farming, and tried various harvest innovations. He admitted he gained a lot of knowledge that can be applied after returning to school. ‘I am currently running an environmentally themed programme. So, there is a lot of knowledge I can take home and try to apply,’ he said. For Yasser, GreenBus Pertamina is not just an educational journey, but also a space that brings young people together with good practices that can be replicated in their own environments. ‘GreenBus Pertamina can be a platform that leads young people to care more about the environment. This programme opens our eyes that protecting the environment can start from simple things done together,’ he said. The same sentiment was shared by another participant, Nuzlah. According to her, participating in the GreenBus Pertamina programme gave her the opportunity to learn directly. ‘I think this activity broadens my insight, experience, and also my network. We can search for information on social media or the internet, but coming directly to the field feels different. We can see and practice environmental knowledge firsthand,’ she said. Vice President of Corporate Communication at PT Pertamina (Persero), Muhammad Baron, explained that the GreenBus Pertamina programme is an educational initiative that provides young people with the opportunity to see and engage directly in various actions addressing sustainability issues. In 2026, four locations will be visited. ‘In this programme, the selected participants will be invited to explore good environmental practices, local culture, technology, and sustainability innovations through educational trips, mentoring, and incubation programmes,’ Baron said. Through GreenBus Pertamina, Baron explained, participants are not only invited to understand environmental issues but also to witness that solutions can start from the smallest neighbourhood. According to him, through Kampung Hijau Cemara, the community, local groups, and businesses have managed to turn the village into a productive green space, while also serving as an inspiration for the younger generation to protect the environment. ‘Besides Kampung Hijau Cemara, participants will also be taken to other Pertamina CSR programme locations that are aligned with and implement community-based environmental management practices, namely Kampung Eduwisata Bhinneka in Central Jakarta, where climate-conscious village management utilises renewable energy; Kampung Keberagaman dan Batik Proklim Lestari in Cirebon, to see batik making using plastic bottle waste for a canting-free technique; and Kampoeng Radjoet Binong, Merajut Asa Kita in Bandung, to see and learn together about making fashion accessories using fabric scraps,’ Baron concluded. Beyond this programme, Pertamina also runs the Sekolah Energi Berdikari STEM programme. This is an experience-based environmental education initiative designed to foster awareness and real action among the younger generation on sustainability issues, using simple technology and science.
