Pertamina's Gamsunoro Vessel Successfully Navigates Strait of Hormuz Amid Tensions
The Gamsunoro vessel, owned by PT Pertamina International Shipping (PIS), successfully navigated the Strait of Hormuz on Wednesday, 24 June 2026, at 20:00 Western Indonesia Time (WIB) following intensive cooperation between the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Indonesian Embassy in Tehran, and the company. The successful passage comes after the ship was previously detained since early March 2026 due to the conflict between the United States and Iran.
The vessel began its journey from the Arabian Gulf at 01:06 Dubai time, travelling for 16 hours at a speed of 7.5 knots. It reached the mouth of the Strait of Hormuz at 13:00 local time before finally clearing the strait four hours later. PJS Corporate Secretary of PIS, Vega Pita, stated that the decision to proceed with the crossing was made after a month of strict risk assessment discussions and close coordination with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Vega expressed gratitude for the diplomatic support, noting that dozens of requirements had to be met before the ship could move, including insurance, technical and operational aspects, security, and crew readiness. Throughout the voyage, the vessel was monitored 24 hours a day, with the crew at sea maintaining constant coordination with the crisis centre team on land. The company also engaged with various stakeholders and authorities to monitor the situation in real time and ensure all operational steps were taken with caution.
The successful crossing of the Strait of Hormuz is seen as a crucial part of PIS’s efforts to maintain shipping operations amidst global geopolitical uncertainty, particularly in one of the world’s most strategic energy distribution routes. Meanwhile, another PIS fleet in the Arabian Gulf, the VLCC Pertamina Pride, is currently in the preparation stage to move, with the company continuing to evaluate security developments, traffic conditions, density, and other risks while considering international recommendations.
