Pertamina's Fortune Southeast 500 Ranking Should Spur National Energy Security, Says Analyst

Energy analyst Feiral Rizky Batubara believes PT Pertamina (Persero)’s return to the Fortune Southeast 500 list should act as a spur and a reminder of the company’s immense responsibility in safeguarding national energy security. According to Feiral, the achievement demonstrates Pertamina’s ability to compete globally while being increasingly required to reinforce its role as the backbone of energy supply for the Indonesian people. “The most important thing Pertamina needs to do is to continuously improve the quality and capacity of energy used by both the public and industry. This is Pertamina’s main focus,” he said in Jakarta, Saturday (20/6/2026). Feiral noted that Pertamina’s position as a state-owned energy company carries a character and responsibility distinct from other global oil and gas firms. On one hand, Pertamina is required to generate profit and maintain business health. On the other, it bears a strategic mandate to ensure energy supply remains available, affordable, and evenly distributed for all Indonesians. Feiral assessed that future challenges in the energy sector will grow increasingly complex, influenced by rising domestic energy demand, global geopolitical dynamics, and the acceleration of the transition towards cleaner energy. Under these conditions, Pertamina must continue to strengthen its operational capacity and investments to maintain a balance between business sustainability and national energy security. He explained that a growing business scale must be accompanied by increased efficiency, strengthened governance, and the courage to transform across all business lines. “With this, Pertamina can maintain its global competitiveness while fulfilling the strategic mandate given by the state. Its status as a Fortune Global 500 company should be seen as a starting point. Pertamina must continue to be driven to innovate, transform, improve service quality, strengthen national energy resilience, and support Indonesia’s economic development targets,” he said. Feiral further asserted that Pertamina’s success in breaking into the ranks of the world’s largest companies also reflects Indonesia’s significant potential in the energy sector. Therefore, this achievement should be leveraged to strengthen investor confidence, expand strategic cooperation, and accelerate the development of energy projects that add value to the national economy. “With its increasingly recognised global position, Pertamina must continue to maintain its positive performance while serving as a locomotive in realising strong, sustainable energy security and supporting Indonesia’s future economic growth,” he said.
