Intensive cooperation between Indonesia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Indonesian Embassy in Tehran, and PT Pertamina International Shipping (PIS) has yielded positive results amidst geopolitical tensions in the Middle East. The PIS-owned vessel Gamsunoro, which had been stranded since early March 2026 due to the conflict between the United States and Iran, successfully passed the critical point of the Strait of Hormuz safely on Wednesday, 24 June 2026, at 20.00 Western Indonesian Time, thanks to a collaborative corporate emergency strategy and protective diplomacy.

Embarking on a 16-hour journey, the Gamsunoro began moving from the Arabian Gulf on Wednesday at 01.06 Dubai time, or approximately 04.06 Western Indonesian Time. The vessel sailed at a speed of 7.5 knots and arrived at the mouth of the Strait of Hormuz around 13.00 local time, or 16.00 Western Indonesian Time. Four hours later, the vessel was confirmed to have successfully transited the strait and reached a safe point.

PIS Acting Corporate Secretary, Vega Pita, stated that the decision for the Gamsunoro’s transit was made after the company conducted rigorous risk assessment discussions over the past month, along with intensive coordination with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. “We thank the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Indonesian Embassy in Tehran, Iran, for their support throughout this period. The choice of timing and route for transiting the Strait of Hormuz underwent extremely strict discussion and risk assessment. We noted dozens of requirements that the vessel had to fulfil, ranging from insurance, technical and operational aspects, and security, to crew readiness, before it was decided the vessel could begin moving from the Arabian Gulf,” Vega said.

She added that during the voyage, the vessel was monitored 24 hours a day. The crew at sea continuously coordinated with the onshore team standing by at the PIS crisis centre to ensure the safety of the voyage. According to her, the company also continued to coordinate with various stakeholders and other relevant authorities to monitor the situation’s development in real time and ensure all operational steps were taken carefully.

The Gamsunoro’s successful transit of the Strait of Hormuz is considered part of PIS’s efforts to maintain shipping operations amidst global geopolitical uncertainty, particularly in one of the world’s most strategic energy distribution routes. Meanwhile, another PIS fleet in the Arabian Gulf region, the VLCC Pertamina Pride, is currently in the preparation stage to move, while continuing to evaluate security developments, traffic conditions, density, and other risks, as well as considering international recommendations. “Thank you for the support and prayers from all parties and the Indonesian people for the Gamsunoro. We also request support and prayers for the VLCC Pertamina Pride so that it can soon transit the Strait of Hormuz safely,” Vega concluded.
