Pertamina Vessel Evacuates 17 Victims from KMP Mutiara Sentosa 2 Fire in the Java Sea

A vessel owned by PT Pertamina Patra Niaga, MT Transko Arafura, successfully rescued 17 victims of a fire incident involving KM Mutiara Sentosa 2 in the Java Sea. The evacuation took place around 19 nautical miles north of Sapudi Island. VP Corporate Communication of PT Pertamina Patra Niaga, Kitty Andhora, stressed that human safety is the top priority in any emergency condition. "Human safety is always the top priority. We are grateful that the crew of MT Transko Arafura were able to assist in the rescue of the victims," said Kitty Andhora on Monday (3/8). During the rescue operation, the crew of MT Transko Arafura collaborated with Basarnas, relevant agencies, and several vessels in the vicinity of the incident. Through this coordination, 17 victims were successfully evacuated in a safe and healthy condition. The integrated search and rescue operation involved six ships and one tug boat. Authorities are continuing the search for victims, evacuation, and passenger data collection. Kitty expressed appreciation for the dedication of all crew members involved in the humanitarian mission. "The courage, professionalism, and coordination demonstrated by the captain and the entire crew reflect the humanitarian values that are always part of Pertamina’s work culture in providing assistance during emergency situations," Kitty stated. Pertamina Patra Niaga also expressed its concern over the disaster. The company hopes that all victims still in the search process can be found and receive help soon. The fire occurred on KMP Mutiara Sentosa 2, which was serving the Surabaya–Makassar route. The incident took place on Sunday (2/8) around 06:00–07:00 WIB in the waters north of Sumenep, Madura, East Java. When the fire broke out, the ship was in the northern tip of Madura Island, and communication with the captain was temporarily lost. The vessel was reported to be carrying approximately 250 people. Minister of Transportation Dudy Purwagandhi stated that the government will evaluate the operator of KMP Mutiara Sentosa 2 after the National Transportation Safety Committee (KNKT) completes its investigation into the cause of the fire. The incident remains under the handling of the authorities, with search and investigation processes ongoing to ensure all passengers are accounted for and receive necessary assistance.
