Pertamina Strengthens National Hydrogen Development to Support Energy Security
PT Pertamina (Persero) is intensifying the development of national hydrogen as part of efforts to build energy security while supporting the transition to cleaner energy. Through various projects being developed from Sumatra to Papua, Pertamina is building an integrated hydrogen ecosystem, encompassing production, utilisation, and collaboration with various strategic partners.
One such development is the construction of a hydrogen hub in Sei Mangkei and Kuala Tanjung, North Sumatra, which has a production capacity of up to 4,000 kilogrammes of hydrogen per day. This project is part of Pertamina’s move to accelerate the formation of a national hydrogen ecosystem capable of supporting Indonesia’s future energy needs.
Pertamina’s Vice President Director, Oki Muraza, stated that hydrogen will become a strategic energy source complementing the national energy mix in the future. Therefore, its development requires cross-sector collaboration to create a strong and sustainable ecosystem.
‘This hydrogen ecosystem will be a new achievement in Indonesia’s energy transformation, just like the success of B50 biodiesel which has been inaugurated by the government,’ Oki said while speaking at the Global Hydrogen Ecosystem Summit & Exhibition (GHES) at the Jakarta International Convention Centre (JICC), Jakarta, on Tuesday (21/7).
According to Oki, Pertamina is not only developing hydrogen production projects but also building the ecosystem’s foundation, which covers four main aspects: strengthening regulation, developing technology, providing financing support, and supplying integrated infrastructure.
‘Specifically for infrastructure, we hope to optimise the use of national strategic assets so that hydrogen development can be carried out more efficiently, competitively, and economically,’ he said.
In addition to North Sumatra, Pertamina is also developing various hydrogen projects in other regions of Indonesia. In Plaju, South Sumatra, Pertamina is running a pilot project for solar-based hydrogen production with a capacity of 20 kilogrammes per day. Meanwhile, in Lampung, a geothermal-based green hydrogen production facility is targeted to begin commercial operations in November with a capacity of 100 kilogrammes per day.
On Java Island, Pertamina, together with several partners, is developing a hydrogen mobility ecosystem in Jakarta. In West Java, Pertamina has received grant support from the South Korean government to develop a project processing solid and liquid waste into biogas, which will then be further processed into hydrogen.
