Pertamina Strengthens Global Collaboration to Boost National Oil and Gas Production

Pertamina continues to strengthen strategic steps based on global collaboration to drive an increase in national oil and gas (migas) production.

This is reflected in the meeting between Pertamina’s Deputy Director Oki Muraza and Head of the Petroleum Engineering Department at the Colorado School of Mines, Jennifer L. Miskimins.

The meeting carried the theme Collaboration for Supporting the Production Increase, with a focus on strengthening education and research as the foundation for boosting oil and gas production, particularly from non-conventional resources (unconventional oil and gas).

Both parties discussed opportunities for strategic cooperation encompassing joint research on complex reservoirs, development of technology for exploiting non-conventional oil and gas, and enhancement of human resource (HR) capacity through advanced education programmes and academic exchanges.

This approach is considered important to address the challenge of declining production from conventional oil and gas fields that have entered the mature phase.

“Pertamina is currently focused on developing existing fields while also promoting the development of non-conventional reservoirs,” he stated in a written explanation received by Kompas.com on Wednesday (6/5/2026).

To that end, Oki said, Pertamina continues to strengthen its capabilities, knowledge, and mastery of technology to support sustainable production optimisation.

From an academic perspective, the Colorado School of Mines is recognised as one of the world’s leading institutions in energy and petroleum engineering.

The US-based campus excels in developing technology and research on unconventional resources, including shale oil, tight oil, and oil shale.

Its experience in developing low-permeability reservoirs and mastery of technologies such as hydraulic fracturing and horizontal drilling make it a strategic partner in supporting the transformation of Indonesia’s upstream oil and gas industry.

The discussions also covered opportunities for trilateral collaboration involving Universitas Pertamina as part of strengthening the national education and research ecosystem.

This cooperation is directed towards developing joint education programmes, establishing a non-conventional oil and gas research centre in Indonesia, and strengthening industry-needs-based curricula.

These steps are deemed strategic for building technological independence while ensuring the sustainability of human resource development in the energy sector.
