PT Pertamina (Persero) is strengthening its national energy security strategy through increasingly flexible and integrated LNG portfolio management. This includes combining domestic and global supply sources, supported by LNG and gas infrastructure across various regions of Indonesia.

This strategy is one of the key focuses Pertamina brings to Gastech 2026 in Bangkok, Thailand. Pertamina’s presence at this global energy forum forms part of efforts to broaden connectivity with international energy industry players while reinforcing opportunities to develop its LNG portfolio and business amid the changing global energy landscape.

Market volatility, geopolitical dynamics, and growing energy demand mean energy security is no longer determined solely by the volume of supply, but also by the ability to obtain the right energy sources, at the right time and location, at competitive cost.

VP of Corporate Communication at PT Pertamina (Persero), Muhammad Baron, said diversification of sources and portfolio flexibility are an important part of maintaining energy security amid global market dynamics.

“For Pertamina, energy security is not just about how much supply is available, but also the ability to obtain energy from the right source, at the right time, at a competitive cost. That is why diversification of sources and LNG portfolio flexibility are important to strengthen Indonesia’s energy security,” said Baron.

To enhance this flexibility, Pertamina is developing an LNG portfolio from various sources. Beyond optimising domestic supply, Pertamina holds an international portfolio, including from Australia and the United States. This diversification gives Pertamina room to adjust supply sources and shipping patterns according to needs, market conditions, and economic considerations.

This supply flexibility is reinforced by the Pertamina Group’s LNG and gas infrastructure, including Perta Arun Gas, Nusantara Regas, the Jawa-1 LNG receiving facility, and PGN’s gas pipeline network spread across various regions of Indonesia.

The integration of supply sources, receiving and storage infrastructure, regasification, pipeline networks, and distribution forms the foundation for building a more adaptive LNG supply chain. With this ecosystem, LNG can be managed according to need, from receipt and storage through to regasification and distribution to various regions.

“Pertamina has an LNG portfolio and gas infrastructure that complement each other. The integration of supply sources, receiving and storage facilities, regasification, and distribution networks gives Pertamina the flexibility to adjust supply to the energy needs of different regions,” explained Baron.

One piece of infrastructure with a strategic position is Perta Arun Gas in Aceh. Located on the Strait of Malacca, one of the world’s main energy trade routes, Arun has the opportunity to develop into a regional LNG hub connecting international supply with Indonesia’s needs and Southeast Asian markets.

This position provides various options for LNG management, from receiving and storing LNG through to reload, transhipment, regasification, and distribution. This flexibility allows LNG management to be tailored to market needs and economic considerations.

Strengthening the portfolio and infrastructure becomes increasingly relevant given the changing Indonesian LNG landscape. Amid growing energy and industrial demand, Indonesia, long known as an LNG producer and exporter, also faces the potential for rising domestic LNG requirements in the future.

This shift presents both a challenge and an opportunity. By connecting global supply, domestic LNG production, national infrastructure, and regional demand, Pertamina can optimise its LNG portfolio while strengthening Indonesia’s position in the LNG supply chain.

According to Baron, Pertamina’s future LNG strategy is oriented not only towards meeting volume targets, but also towards the ability to manage and optimise supply flexibly to deliver greater value.

“Going forward, what will differentiate players is not only the ability to procure LNG, but the ability to manage, optimise, and channel it to where it delivers the greatest benefit. Pertamina wants to connect global LNG supply with Indonesia’s energy security while capturing growth opportunities,” Baron concluded.
