Pertamina Strengthens Efforts to Develop National Hydrogen Ecosystem

State-owned energy company PT Pertamina (Persero) is strengthening governance and infrastructure in its efforts to develop a hydrogen-based new and renewable energy ecosystem in Indonesia. “We are ready to support the four bridges to the future, namely regulation, regulatory framework, technology, and also capital and infrastructure,” said PT Pertamina (Persero) Deputy Director Oki Muraza in Jakarta on Tuesday. He further stated that these steps require cooperation from various related stakeholders, ranging from the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources to other state energy companies such as PT PLN (Persero). “For infrastructure, we are certainly very keen to share infrastructure and facilities later with other national assets like PLN, so we can achieve economical production,” he said. Oki explained that Pertamina’s hydrogen project development is carried out by adapting to the characteristics of energy sources in each region across the country, such as solar power, geothermal, and biogas. He cited the development of a hydrogen hub in Sungai Mangke and Kuala Tanjung with a capacity of 4,000 kilogrammes per day. Furthermore, there is a pilot project for solar-based hydrogen production in Plaju, South Sumatra, with a production capacity of 20 kilogrammes per day, as well as a hydrogen production facility in Lampung producing 100 kilogrammes per day from geothermal sources. Oki also conveyed that Pertamina is receiving support from South Korea in developing technology for hydrogen production from liquid waste utilising biogas in West Java. In addition, Pertamina is preparing additional hydrogen production capacity of 300,000 kilogrammes per day integrated with the Refinery Development Master Plan (RDMP) project. He expressed hope that the development of this hydrogen-based energy ecosystem can proceed sustainably to support the vision of national energy security and independence. “Hopefully this hydrogen ecosystem will become another achievement for Indonesia, just as the Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources recently inaugurated the biodiesel mandate reaching 50 percent (B50),” Oki said.
