Pertamina Strengthens Clean Energy Ecosystem Through Collaboration to Convert Waste into Low-Carbon Hydrogen
PT Pertamina (Persero) is strengthening its commitment to national clean energy development through the signing of a Joint Agreement with the West Java Provincial Government regarding a strategic collaboration to utilise waste for the production of low-carbon hydrogen, biomethane, and biofuel. This partnership represents a significant step towards building an integrated hydrogen ecosystem while simultaneously supporting the energy transition and addressing waste management issues in West Java.
The collaboration was formalised through the signing of the Joint Agreement between PT Pertamina (Pers cáo) and the West Java Provincial Government in Bandung on 29 July. The agreement encompasses various strategic areas of cooperation, ranging from the development of new and renewable energy and environmental management to community empowerment.
Emma Sri Martini, Director of Strategy, Portfolio, and Business Development at PT Pertamina (Persero), stated that a primary focus of the cooperation is the planned utilisation of methane derived from waste at the Sarimukti landfill in West Bandung Regency. Through this collaboration, biogas produced from waste will be purified into biomethane, which will subsequently be processed into hydrogen. This effort is part of the broader development of a waste-to-energy ecosystem.
“This cooperation covers various fields, one of which is waste management in the Sarimukti landfill area. The processed waste will produce biogas, which will then be developed into hydrogen and biomethane,” said Emma.
According to Emma, the development of this project represents a synergy within the Pertamina Group to create an integrated clean energy value chain from upstream to downstream. “This programme will be executed alongside Pertamina New & Renewable Energy (PNRE) Subholding and Gas Subholding. Each will have specific roles and responsibilities, ranging from feedstock provision, processing, and infrastructure construction to the distribution and commercialisation of energy products.”
Emma further explained that the collaboration also involves international partners, including Hyundai from South Korea, as part of the effort to accelerate the development of low-carbon energy technology. “We view this as an excellent collaboration between Pertamina, the West Java Provincial Government, and international partners in developing low-carbon energy, particularly hydrogen. We hope this programme will serve as a pilot for building a hydrogen ecosystem in Indonesia. If the implementation is successful, this business model can be expanded and replicated in various regions,” she concluded.
