Pertamina Seeks Oil and LPG Supplies from the US, Russian Imports Being Prepared
Deputy Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources, Yuliot Tanjung, stated that a team from PT Pertamina (Persero) is currently in the United States to seek quick supplies of crude oil and LPG. This step is being taken to ensure that domestic energy needs remain fulfilled.
The government is accelerating negotiations with various global energy companies to obtain supplies in a short time. This effort is running parallel to plans for imports from Russia, which are still in the preparation stage for the scheme.
“This morning I also held a meeting with the Foreign Ministry and several ambassadors. Following that commitment, Pertamina’s team is now in America,” Yuliot said in Jakarta on Friday (24/4/2026).
He stated that the government is seeking supply sources from various countries to keep energy distribution stable. The needs for crude and LPG are the main focus of the ongoing negotiations.
“So, which companies can supply us quickly and how we expect the delivery. Various sources for our crude needs and also for domestic LPG needs can be fulfilled,” Yuliot said.
He explained that Indonesia has long imported energy from the United States, especially for LPG. The import share from that country still dominates national needs.
“For LPG, our total imports are around 7 million tonnes. Of that amount, about 60 percent comes from America,” Yuliot stated.
On the other hand, the government is also continuing discussions on crude oil imports from Russia with a volume of around 150 million barrels until the end of 2026. The implementation scheme is still being finalised to enable quick realisation.
Yuliot added that energy imports do not depend on one country. The government is opening opportunities for cooperation with various partners to maintain supply resilience. The high national energy needs are the background for accelerating the search for supplies from abroad. Oil consumption reaches around 1.6 million barrels per day, far above domestic production which is in the range of 600 thousand barrels per day.
The government is also designing the distribution of supplies for various sectors, including fuel, industry, and petrochemicals. The utilisation of energy is directed to support national economic activities.
“As long as these domestic needs can be distributed, petrochemical raw materials are also needed,” Yuliot said.
Amid these efforts, the government is preparing various import scheme options to make the procurement process faster and more efficient. Cross-ministry coordination and with business actors continues to ensure that energy supplies remain secure.
