Pertamina has outlined its strategy to secure national energy through the optimisation of domestic resources, higher oil and gas production, reduction of energy imports, and the sustainable development of low-carbon businesses.

The strategy was presented by Pertamina’s Director of Strategy, Portfolio and Business Development, Emma Sri Martini, in front of dozens of students during the ‘Students Meet The Global Executives’ session at the IPA Convex 2026 event, held 20–22 May 2026 at ICE BSD Tangerang.

At the largest upstream oil and gas exhibition in Indonesia, Emma explained the global geopolitical challenges and Indonesia’s position as a net energy importer. This is a major concern in safeguarding national energy security.

‘This is our homework. It also represents Indonesia’s homework, regarding how energy security becomes our target, even in the next four to five years in line with the President’s mandate,’ she said, quoted on Wednesday, 21 May 2026.

According to her, Pertamina’s main strategy over the coming years is to optimise domestic resources by increasing national oil and gas production and lifting. The efforts are carried out through technology deployment, strengthening strategic partnerships, and encouraging government fiscal support to attract more investors to accelerate exploration and exploitation of oil and gas.

‘What is important is how to create an enabling environment to improve the economics of projects, the feasibility of projects, and to reassure the Government to provide some kind of scheme and fiscal incentives that are favourable for projects to accelerate production and lifting,’ she explained.

Emma explained that Pertamina currently runs two main pillars of its business strategy: optimising existing fossil-energy-based businesses and accelerating the development of low-carbon businesses. However, a large portion of the company’s investment is still focused on the upstream oil and gas sector to safeguard national production.

In the downstream sector, Pertamina continues implementing various strategic steps to reduce dependence on imported finished products, including supporting the national biodiesel mandate program. Following the B40 implementation, the government is also pushing development towards B50 as part of strengthening national energy security.

Additionally, Pertamina is revamping refineries to increase the capacity to produce energy that is more environmentally friendly, including the development of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) based on used cooking oil via co-processing in refineries and plans for building a new biorefinery.
