Pertamina Provides Desks and Chairs to Support SDN Batu Cermin in NTT

Desks that had begun to develop holes and chairs that were already wobbly previously accompanied the daily routine of a number of pupils at SDN Batu Cermin, Komodo District, West Manggarai Regency, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT). Despite the limited conditions, teaching and learning activities continued every day.

Now, the learning atmosphere is gradually changing. Through its Corporate Social and Environmental Responsibility (TJSL) programme, PT Pertamina (Persero) has provided 39 desks and 70 chairs to support teaching and learning activities at the school.

The headmaster of SDN Batu Cermin, Agustinus Aba, said the assistance addressed one of the school’s most pressing needs. Until now, some of the desks and chairs had been in use for a long time, meaning their condition was no longer optimal for supporting learning activities.

“Previously, they used whatever facilities were available. There were chairs that were already wobbly, desks with holes, dull surfaces, and some even beginning to rot because they had been used for so long,” said Agustinus in a written statement on Tuesday (22/8/2026).

The need was then communicated to Pertamina and followed up through a verification process until the assistance could finally be realised.

Agustinus admitted he was initially surprised when he first received information about the support. After receiving an explanation and going through the verification process, the school confirmed that the assistance was genuinely intended to meet the pupils’ learning facility needs.

Making Learning More Comfortable and Safe

For the school, the new desks and chairs are not merely additional facilities. The equipment is now being used by pupils, particularly those in grade 1, so that they can take part in learning activities more comfortably. Pupils also no longer need to worry about being hit by tables whose legs were previously fragile.

“The impact has been deeply felt. The desks and chairs provided by Pertamina are very beneficial and support learning activities in the classroom,” said Agustinus.

“How can learning possibly be effective if the facilities and infrastructure are not supportive?” he continued.

According to Agustinus, the simple change in the classroom has also provided new enthusiasm for both pupils and teachers. More adequate facilities help the school create a more comfortable learning environment and support the daily learning process.

Agustinus also expressed his appreciation for the attention given to his school. He hopes the collaboration can continue to grow to support the improvement of education quality at SDN Batu Cermin.

“Our hope is that Pertamina will remain a partner and look at what the school needs. Support like this means a great deal to us in continuing to improve the quality of education and making the school more excellent in the future,” said Agustinus.

Through its TJSL programme, Pertamina continues to encourage improvements in education quality by providing support that answers the needs of the community.

For the pupils of SDN Batu Cermin, that support has now arrived in a form that is simple yet close to their daily lives: a more decent place to learn to accompany their steps towards the future.
