Pertamina Pride Exits Strait of Hormuz, Foreign Ministry Cites Improving Regional Situation

The Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has stated that the successful passage of the very large crude carrier (VLCC) Pertamina Pride through the Strait of Hormuz this week signals an improving situation in the region. Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Yvonne Mewengkang noted that the Pertamina Pride passed through the Strait of Hormuz on Thursday, 8 July, after the first detained Pertamina tanker, the Gamsunoro, successfully exited on 24 June. “This success, following the Gamsunoro’s safe passage in June, demonstrates a positive development in the region despite the very dynamic situation,” Yvonne said during a media briefing in Jakarta on Thursday. According to the spokesperson, the safe passage of the Pertamina Pride was the result of close coordination between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Indonesian Embassy in Tehran, and PT Pertamina International Shipping (PIS) as the vessel’s operator, particularly in ensuring the safety of the ship and its crew. She added that the achievement was also the fruit of good support and communication with the relevant authorities in Iran. Yvonne confirmed that after exiting the Strait of Hormuz, the Pertamina Pride is scheduled to arrive in Indonesia on 23 July. In a separate statement on Thursday, PIS Acting Corporate Secretary Vega Pita confirmed that after successfully exiting the Strait of Hormuz, both the Gamsunoro and Pertamina Pride have continued their voyage to the homeland. “Both PIS vessels, which had been held up since March, can now continue their journey and operate as usual,” Vega said. She explained that the Pertamina Pride began moving on Tuesday, 7 July 2026, at 13:00 Dubai time and successfully transited the critical area and the Strait of Hormuz on Wednesday, 8 July 2026, at 00:15 Western Indonesia Time. As with the Gamsunoro, the timing and route selection for the Pertamina Pride’s transit through the Strait of Hormuz underwent very strict discussion and risk assessment, noting dozens of requirements that had to be met, ranging from operational aspects, security, insurance, to crew readiness. Vega explained that all crew members of the Pertamina Pride are in safe and sound condition. The tanker, with a capacity of 2 million barrels of crude oil, is continuing its journey to Cilacap to deliver its cargo in order to maintain national energy security.
