Pertamina Patra Niaga Strengthens Sustainable Food Security Through Cultivation Innovation
PT Pertamina Patra Niaga continues to strengthen its commitment to supporting national food security through various Community Involvement and Development (CID) programmes based on local potential and community empowerment. These initiatives aim to provide solutions that not only increase food availability but also enhance the welfare of communities surrounding the company’s operational areas.
One of the flagship programmes is the development of fish cultivation based on biofloc technology in Mundam Village, Medang Kampai District, Dumai City, Riau. This programme serves as a response to the challenges faced by coastal communities who have traditionally relied on uncertain sea catches due to weather factors, limited fishery facilities, and the threat of abrasion. Through biofloc technology, the community now has an alternative food source and a more stable source of income through tilapia cultivation, which has a harvest period of approximately 4–6 months.
This programme is also supported by a Solar Power Plant (PLTS) with a capacity of 4.4 kWp, which is capable of saving electricity costs by up to Rp9.3 million per year and reducing carbon emissions by 5.52 tonnes of CO₂ per year.
In North Sumatra, Pertamina Patra Niaga, through the Pematang Siantar Fuel Terminal, is developing the ‘Siantar Habonaron’ programme, an integrated urban farming model that optimises residential yard space to support family food security. This programme was established to address the challenges of limited land, economic pressure, and the need for affordable food access. By integrating layer chicken farming, vegetable cultivation, and the management of organic waste and maggots, the community is able to produce eggs and vegetables to meet daily household needs. Chicken manure is utilised as a planting medium, while household food waste is processed into maggot feed, which is then reused as livestock feed.
Asih, a member of the Habonaron group, stated, “Since receiving assistance from Pertamina Patra Niaga, my child’s breakfast needs have been met through the produce from this livestock.”
Pertamina Patra Niaga is committed to continuing to deliver programmes that provide tangible benefits to the community while supporting the creation of welfare and sustainable development.
