Pertamina Patra Niaga Strengthens Biodiversity Commitment with Turtle Conservation
As a response to the threat to sea turtle populations on Bajulmati and Modangan beaches, Pertamina, through the ‘Ibu Kota Penyu’ (Turtle Capital) Programme, continues its efforts to protect marine wildlife. Since 2020, this area has been a natural landing site for five of the world’s seven turtle species. Meanwhile, from 2024 to 2025, the Bajulmati Sea Turtle Conservation (BSTC) area recorded that the programme successfully released more than 14,000 hatchlings from 19,102 turtle eggs.
This is part of Pertamina Patra Niaga’s effort to strengthen its commitment to preserving biodiversity through the ‘Singgah di Samudra’ (A Stopover in the Ocean) activity in Gajahrejo Village, Malang Regency. The activity is part of the FT Malang Community Involvement Development programme, ‘Ibu Kota Penyu’, which focuses on turtle conservation and public education on the importance of protecting the marine ecosystem.
“Singgah di Samudra is proof of Pertamina Patra Niaga’s commitment to delivering a CID programme that not only protects the environment but also fosters public awareness. The hope is that every participant returns home with a valuable experience and a spirit to safeguard Indonesia’s coasts and turtles,” said VP Corporate Communication of Pertamina Patra Niaga, Kitty Andhora, as quoted on Monday, 27 July 2026.
The series of activities included a Coastal Nature School, an exhibition of dioramas made from paper waste, a ‘Titip Cerita untuk Samudra’ (Messages for the Ocean) activity, and the release of 1,500 olive ridley hatchlings and one adult olive ridley turtle that had completed rehabilitation. The activity involved the Natural Resources Conservation Agency (BBKSDA), local government, the Gajahrejo Village Administration, conservation communities, and the public, with around 200 participants taking part.
Through the Ibu Kota Penyu Programme, Pertamina Patra Niaga continues to strengthen habitat conservation, environmental education, and collaboration with various stakeholders to maintain the sustainability of turtle habitats on the South Malang coast. “Pertamina Patra Niaga is committed to delivering programmes that are not only beneficial for the environment but also actively involve the community in achieving sustainable development. This commitment is realised through various initiatives that support the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the implementation of Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles across all lines of the company’s business and operations,” concluded Kitty.
