A fatal accident involving a fuel tanker and a pickup truck has resulted in the deaths of a group of students participating in a Community Service Programme (KKN). The victims included students from Lambung Mangkurat University (ULM) and Nahdlatul Ulama University of South Kalimantan (UNU Kalsel).

Responding to the incident, PT Pertamina Patra Niaga Regional Kalimantan expressed its condolences regarding the traffic accident on the Trans Kalimantan Road, Satui District, Tanah Bumbu Regency, South Kalimantan, which occurred on Saturday (1/8/2026). Edi Mangun, the Area Manager for Communication, Relations & CSR of Pertamina Patra Niaga Regional Kalimantan, stated in an official release that the company is deeply saddened by the tragedy.

“We express our deepest condolences and sympathy to the families of the victims. We hope those receiving medical treatment recover quickly, and that the bereaved families are granted strength and patience,” said Edud.

Regarding information concerning the involvement of the fuel tanker, Edi emphasised that internal investigations by Pertamina Patra Niaga Regional Kalimantan show that the vehicle was not an operational vehicle owned by Pertamina, nor was it recorded as performing any service activities at Pertamina Patra Niaga fuel terminals.

“We are continuing to coordinate with relevant parties to verify information regarding the vehicle. The process of handling and investigation is entirely left to the authorities,” Edi asserted.

The tragic accident began when a tanker truck travelling from Banjarbaru towards Batulicin suddenly lost control. The vehicle then struck a pickup truck carrying the group of community service students. The fatal event took place on the Batulicin-Banjarbaru Alternative Road, Gunung Raya Village, Mantewe District, Tanah Bumbu Regency, South Kalimantan, at approximately 12:00 WITA on Saturday.

The incident, involving a pickup truck used as an official vehicle for the Irigasi Batulicin Village, claimed seven lives. The deceased include the truck driver and six passengers in the pickup truck, three of whom were students from ULM and UNU Kalsel.
