Pertamina Patra Niaga Conserves Turtles in Malang Regency

PT Pertamina Patra Niaga is strengthening its corporate commitment to biodiversity through turtle conservation activities and public education on the importance of preserving the marine ecosystem in Malang Regency, East Java.

VP Corporate Communication of Pertamina Patra Niaga, Kitty Andhora, stated that the ‘Singgah di Samudra’ event in Gajahrejo Village is part of the Community Involvement Development (CID) programme of Fuel Terminal (FT) Malang, known as the Turtle Capital. She explained that as a response to threats to the turtle population at Bajulmati and Modangan beaches, Pertamina, through the Turtle Capital programme, continues its efforts to protect marine life. Since 2020, this area has become a natural landing site for five of the world’s seven turtle species.

Meanwhile, from 2024 to 2025, the Bajulmati Sea Turtle Conservation (BSTC) recorded that the programme has released more than 14,000 hatchlings from 19,102 turtle eggs.

“‘Singgah di Samudra’ is proof of Pertamina Patra Niaga’s commitment to presenting a CID programme that not only protects the environment but also raises public awareness. The hope is that every participant returns home with valuable experience and a spirit to safeguard the coast and Indonesia’s turtles,” said Kitty.

The series of activities included a ‘Coastal Nature School’, an exhibition of dioramas made from paper waste, an activity called ‘Titip Cerita untuk Samudra’ (A Story for the Ocean), and the release of 1,500 olive ridley hatchlings and one adult olive ridley turtle that had completed rehabilitation. The activity involved the Natural Resources Conservation Agency (BBKSDA), Perhutani, the Gajahrejo Village Government, conservation communities, and the public, with around 200 participants.

Through the Turtle Capital programme, Pertamina Patra Niaga continues to strengthen habitat conservation, environmental education, and collaboration with various stakeholders to ensure the sustainability of turtle habitats along the southern coast of Malang. Pertamina Patra Niaga is committed to presenting programmes that are not only beneficial for the environment but also actively involve the community in realising sustainable development.
