Pertamina Patra Niaga Achieves PROPER Gold through FAME Innovation and Water Hyacinth Benefits in Surabaya
REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA – Pertamina Patra Niaga’s East Java, Bali, and Nusa Tenggara Region (Jatimbalinus), through its Integrated Terminal (IT) Surabaya unit, has successfully achieved the PROPER Gold predicate in environmental management from the Ministry of Environment and Forestry (KLHK) at the 2025 PROPER Environmental Awards ceremony.
This achievement is supported by the implementation of two flagship programmes: the Eco Innovation for FAME Reception via Pipeline and the Lentera Pagesangan community empowerment initiative, which emphasises sustainability and circular economy principles.
Corporate Secretary of Pertamina Patra Niaga, Roberth MV Dumatubun, stated that this accomplishment is part of the company’s consistent efforts to deliver social and environmental innovations across its operational areas.
“This PROPER Gold achievement serves as proof of Pertamina Patra Niaga’s commitment to consistently implementing ESG principles. The programmes at IT Surabaya represent one of seven Pertamina Patra Niaga units that have achieved PROPER Gold through sustainable social innovations and community empowerment,” said Roberth.
He added that this success demonstrates the synergy between operational innovations and community empowerment in creating sustainable added value for the environment and society.
The Eco Innovation FAME Reception programme introduces significant changes to operational processes, shifting from tank truck-based reception to direct reception from ships via pipeline. This transformation enhances operational efficiency and safety while strengthening efforts to reduce environmental impacts. The implementation of this programme has successfully reduced the global warming potential by up to 45.6 per cent.
Meanwhile, the Lentera Pagesangan programme stems from the Balik Kanan Movement, which encourages the community to change their perspective on waste and rivers—from sources of problems to valuable resources. This approach promotes active community involvement in community-based environmental management.
The community is engaged in managing domestic liquid waste through WWTP (Wastewater Treatment Installation) and RWTP (River Water Treatment Installation) using water hyacinth filters. From this implementation, the Lentera Pagesangan programme delivers various tangible impacts, including annual water savings of 345.21 cubic metres, utilisation of 83 kg of organic waste, and cost efficiency in reducing water pollution by Rp911,418 per year. The programme also involves around 1,141 beneficiaries, both directly and indirectly.
Area Manager for Communication, Relations & CSR at Pertamina Patra Niaga’s Jatimbalinus Region, Ahad Rahedi, stated that the success of this programme is inseparable from the active involvement of the community as the main driver of change.
“The Lentera Pagesangan programme shows that environmental change can start at the community level. Through strong collaboration, the community can manage its surrounding resources to become more valuable while improving environmental quality and collective welfare,” said Ahad.
One of the programme’s drivers, Ibu Melik, who is an environmental cadre and community figure, stated that change begins with collective awareness. “For the earth, if not us, who else; if not now, when,” she remarked.
Through these various innovations and collaborations, Pertamina Patra Niaga continues to commit to delivering sustainable environmental management, while strengthening the community’s role in creating a cleaner, healthier, and more productive ecosystem.
