Pertamina NRE Ready to Develop Solar Power Plants on PTBA's Former Mining Land

Pertamina New & Renewable Energy (Pertamina NRE) has announced its readiness to develop solar power plant (PLTS) projects by utilising the operational areas and former mining land of PT Bukit Asam (Persero) Tbk (PTBA). The commitment was formalised in a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed by both parties on Thursday (2/7) at PTBA’s head office in Jakarta. Corporate Secretary of Pertamina NRE Sri Nur Hidayati stated on Friday that this synergy and collaboration is a strategic step to accelerate green energy development while strengthening national energy security. She noted that accelerating the energy transition requires collaboration that can integrate project development, industrial ecosystem readiness, and increased national capacity to meet the growing demand for clean energy. “This collaboration is expected not only to produce sustainable green energy projects but also to encourage an increase in the Domestic Component Level (TKDN), strengthen the national industrial ecosystem, and open up green funding opportunities to support new and renewable energy development in Indonesia,” Sri said. Through this synergy, Pertamina NRE is ready to take a central role in converting national assets into clean energy centres, supporting the fulfilment of the 100GW solar power plant development programme targeted for 2029. The MoU aims to ensure the project proceeds in a measured and rapid manner. Both parties have agreed on a comprehensive scope of cooperation, starting with site identification and continuing with technical and financial feasibility studies. Following this, they will evaluate the cooperation model before proceeding to the full project development stage. PTBA’s Director of Downstreaming and Product Diversification, Turino Yulianto, affirmed the company’s commitment to supporting environmental conservation through the concept of ‘sustainability through technology’. PTBA believes that Pertamina NRE’s technological expertise can address the challenges of global carbon emission reduction without compromising national energy security or economic growth. The state-owned enterprise also believes that this inter-SOE collaboration can serve as a role model for utilising state assets in the clean energy sector. “Through this cooperation with PT Pertamina New & Renewable Energy, we see a great opportunity to optimise national assets owned by PTBA, including the utilisation of former mining land as areas for developing solar power plants and other renewable energy potentials that can provide economic, social, and environmental benefits simultaneously,” Turino said. Through this strategic partnership, PTBA is targeting the optimisation of national assets, including the transformation of reclaimed and rehabilitated former mining land into new green energy centres to support the achievement of Indonesia’s Net Zero Emission target.
