Pertamina NRE introduces solar power for schools through SEB Programme
Through the Sekolah Energi Berdikari (SEB) programme, Pertamina New & Renewable Energy (Pertamina NRE) is providing solar power plants (PLTS) to support learning activities in schools.
“Through the Sekolah Energi Berdikari programme, we want to introduce the use of renewable energy that provides real benefits to the community,” said Susanto August Satria, Manager of Corporate Communication & Stakeholder Management at Pertamina NRE, in a statement in Jakarta on Friday.
Susanto stated that this Social and Environmental Responsibility (TJSL) programme is part of the company’s efforts to deliver renewable energy benefits that can be directly felt by the community, including within educational environments.
“In the school environment, the presence of solar power is expected to support teaching and learning activities while introducing the use of clean energy to the younger generation through experiences that are close to their daily lives,” he added.
One of the schools benefiting from this initiative is SMPN 2 Mandau in Bengkalis Regency, Riau, which has received a solar power system with a capacity of 2.2 kWp and a 5 kWh battery. The installation provides access to a more environmentally friendly and sustainable energy source for the school premises.
In addition to supporting school activities, the facility serves as a learning tool for students to observe the practical application of renewable energy technology firsthand. The SEB programme at SMPN 2 Mandau benefits 768 students and 5 teachers.
Beyond supporting school operations, the use of solar power contributes to emission reduction and energy efficiency. The installed system is projected to reduce carbon emissions by 2.25 tonnes of CO₂ per year and provide electricity cost savings of approximately Rp295,728 per year. These benefits complement the educational value provided by solar energy in the school environment.
“More than just providing solar power, we want to encourage the growth of an understanding that renewable energy can be part of everyday life,” said Susanto. “From schools, we hope that more of the younger generation will recognise, understand, and eventually play a role in the journey towards a cleaner and more sustainable energy future.”
