Pertamina NRE Expands to Bangladesh for Solar Energy Projects
Pertamina NRE, PT Pertamina (Persero)’s new and renewable energy sub-holding, is expanding its green business into South Asia through the signing of a memorandum of understanding with Copenhagen Urban Solar Parks BD Ltd (CUSP) to explore the development of renewable energy projects in Bangladesh. This move is part of the company’s strategy to strengthen its international portfolio while supporting regional energy transition.
The agreement was signed by Pertamina NRE’s President Director, John Anis, and CUSP’s Chairman, Ziaur Rahman, at Grha Pertamina, Jakarta, on Wednesday (May 13, 2026). This collaboration marks the initial stage for both companies to explore investment opportunities in solar power plants (PLTS) or solar photovoltaic (solar PV), including potential cooperation in the operation and maintenance of power plants in Bangladesh.
Pertamina NRE’s President Director, John Anis, stated that this collaboration demonstrates the company’s commitment to expanding the development of green energy in international markets. “Amidst a global situation full of uncertainty, this collaboration is an important moment and a strategic step for developing the renewable energy business in Indonesia while also supporting the need for sustainable clean energy in Bangladesh,” said John.
Within the scope of the cooperation, both parties will conduct feasibility studies covering technical, market, business, environmental, legal aspects, and project risk mitigation. In addition, Pertamina NRE and CUSP will explore strategic, technical, and commercial collaborations through knowledge exchange and the application of technology in renewable energy development.
According to John, developing this collaboration in Bangladesh has the potential to strengthen Pertamina NRE’s international portfolio, which has previously shown positive performance in the Philippines. John revealed that Pertamina NRE currently has an installed capacity of over 1 gigawatt peak (GWp) in the Philippines and continues to grow with a target of reaching 2.6 GWp by the end of 2026. “This concrete achievement is important capital for Pertamina NRE to develop similar projects in Bangladesh,” he added.
Strengthening Regional Cooperation
CUSP’s Chairman, Ziaur Rahman, believes that the partnership with Pertamina NRE opens up opportunities for broader synergies in the development of solar energy projects in Bangladesh. “We welcome this collaboration as a strategic step to present innovative, efficient, and impactful clean energy solutions for sustainable development in Bangladesh,” said Ziaur.
The signing of the cooperation was also witnessed by the Director of Investment and Creative Economy at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Roy Wahab. Roy expressed his appreciation for the initiative of both companies in strengthening economic and energy relations between Indonesia and Bangladesh. “This partnership reflects the close bilateral relationship between the two countries, especially in encouraging green investment and sustainable energy development. Sharing knowledge and experience will undoubtedly benefit both countries,” he said.
According to Roy, this type of collaboration is important to strengthen Indonesia’s position in the global green energy ecosystem while also opening up opportunities for cross-country investment. Through this cooperation, Pertamina NRE and CUSP hope to support the acceleration of the global energy transition and contribute to Indonesia’s Net Zero Emission target by 2060. In addition, the collaboration is expected to encourage green investment, strengthen regional energy resilience, and accelerate the transfer of clean energy technology between Indonesia and Bangladesh.
