Pertamina NRE and US Grains & BioProducts Council Strengthen Knowledge Exchange for Bioethanol Development
Pertamina New & Renewable Energy (Pertamina NRE) signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the US Grains & BioProducts Council (USGBC) on Friday, 27 March 2026.
This step aims to strengthen collaboration on bioethanol development in Indonesia through joint studies, knowledge exchange, and capacity enhancement.
The US Grains & BioProducts Council (USGBC) is an international non-profit organisation representing producers and stakeholders in the grain and agriculture-based bioproducts industry.
USGBC focuses on market development through education, advocacy, and facilitating cooperation and knowledge exchange, including providing technical assistance, training, and promoting best practices to support the sustainable utilisation of bio-based products.
This collaboration emphasises strengthening capabilities through knowledge exchange, capacity building, and adoption of global best practices to support the development of the national bioethanol ecosystem, including its contribution to the potential implementation of E10 ethanol-blended fuel in Indonesia.
Deputy Chief Executive Officer of PT Pertamina (Persero), Oki Muraza, emphasised the importance of this collaboration as part of efforts to bolster national capabilities through global learning. Bioethanol, he said, represents the intersection of energy security and sustainability for Indonesia.
“Through this partnership, we aim to learn more deeply from international experiences and best practices, particularly in developing the bioethanol ecosystem, including feedstock diversification, regulatory frameworks, and the application of domestic ethanol-blended fuels,” Oki stated in a press release on Friday, 3 April 2026.
Within the scope of the collaboration, both parties will conduct joint explorations and studies on strengthening the bioethanol supply chain and infrastructure, including technical, commercial, and regulatory readiness aspects.
Additionally, the collaboration includes conducting technical training, expert exchanges, and organising discussion forums and workshops to share global best practices.
Chief Executive Officer of Pertamina NRE, John Anis, stated that this partnership aligns with the company’s commitment to accelerating the energy transition through strategic knowledge-based collaborations.
Pertamina NRE views this collaboration as a platform to enhance technical and institutional capabilities through structured knowledge exchange.
“By prioritising joint studies, training, and expertise exchanges, we are optimistic about accelerating the development of an adaptive and sustainable bioethanol ecosystem in Indonesia,” John remarked.
This partnership also promotes domestic capacity development through technology adoption, operational optimisation, and improved understanding of bioethanol production management and feedstock diversification.
On the other hand, both parties will facilitate dialogue and knowledge exchange on market development, sustainability frameworks, and public communication strategies to support the implementation of ethanol-blended fuels.
Chairman of USGBC, Mark Wilson, emphasised that this partnership focuses on concrete actions through knowledge exchange and system readiness strengthening. Therefore, this MoU is not merely a formal agreement but an implementation platform.
“Through this partnership, we focus on knowledge exchange in ethanol production and supply chains, strengthening technical aspects and market development, as well as supporting Indonesia’s readiness in developing ethanol-based fuels,” he said.
The signing of this MoU reaffirms the commitment of Pertamina NRE and USGBC to strengthen knowledge-based collaboration, capacity enhancement, and adoption of global best practices.
This synergy is expected to provide tangible contributions to supporting the development of a sustainable bioethanol ecosystem and strengthening energy transition efforts in Indonesia.
