Magelang (ANTARA) - Pertamina New & Renewable Energy (Pertamina NRE), in collaboration with Injourney Destination Management (IDM), is implementing a carbon neutral concept at the Borobudur Temple tourism area in Magelang Regency, Central Java, as an effort to promote more environmentally friendly destination management.

The President Director of PT Pertamina New & Renewable Energy, John Anis, stated in Magelang on Monday that the development of a carbon neutral ecosystem in the Borobudur area involves various parties, including area managers, local governments, the community, and business actors.

According to him, this collaboration is necessary to build a tourism ecosystem that is not only oriented towards increasing tourist arrivals but also considers environmental sustainability and the preservation of cultural heritage.

“The idea is to provide the widest and easiest opportunity for those who wish to participate, both domestically and internationally, in a concrete manner,” he said.

He explained that the implementation of this concept is carried out through various efforts, including the development of more environmentally friendly power plants and the enhancement of nature conservation in the Borobudur area.

He added that the carbon neutral concept in the Borobudur tourism area is expected to provide space for tourists and various stakeholders to contribute to environmental preservation efforts.

The Director of Operations at Injourney Destination Management, Indung Purwita Jati, stated that visitors to the Borobudur Temple area can contribute voluntarily by purchasing carbon credits integrated with online entrance tickets.

“Technically, there will be a contribution from visitors to the Borobudur Temple area in the form of Rupiah via online tickets. This contribution is implemented on a voluntary basis,” he said.

He noted that this contribution is part of the effort to implement the carbon neutral concept while simultaneously increasing visitor awareness regarding the importance of reducing carbon emissions and environmental preservation.

Under this programme, the voluntary contribution offered to visitors is set at Rp6,000 through the entrance ticket.

A visitor to Borobudur Temple, Heni Agus Ningtyas, welcomed the implementation of the carbon neutral concept in the tourism area.

She expressed hope that the programme could encourage efforts to protect the environment, reduce emissions and waste, and increase the use of clean energy.

“Hopefully, it can increase public awareness to protect the environment and maintain Borobudur to be cleaner in the long term,” she said.

She added that the development of a carbon neutral ecosystem in the Borobudur Temple area is expected to serve as an example of implementing sustainability principles in other priority tourism destinations in Indonesia.

These efforts are also part of the support for the decarbonisation process through the reduction of carbon emissions while maintaining the sustainability of the tourism area and the environment surrounding Borobudur Temple.
