Pertamina NRE Accelerates Dedieselisation with Solar Power on Oil Transport Vessel
Pertamina New & Renewable Energy (Pertamina NRE) is accelerating dedieselisation in the maritime sector through the innovative installation of a Solar Power Plant (PLTS) and Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) on the Oil Barge (OB) Patra 2303, owned by PT Pertamina Trans Kontinental (PTK).
Pertamina NRE CEO John Anis stated in Jakarta on Friday that this project marks the first PLTS installation on an Oil Barge within the Pertamina group, and the first time solar panel technology has been applied to a vessel transporting oil.
“The implementation of this project was not a simple matter. The results we see today are a significant reduction in diesel fuel consumption and a real contribution to lowering carbon emissions,” John said.
Pertamina NRE installed an 11.5 kWp PLTS integrated with a 32 kWh BESS to support the vessel’s energy needs. Beyond improving energy efficiency, the use of solar energy on the ship contributes to an annual emission reduction of 79.2 tonnes of CO2 equivalent.
He added that this achievement demonstrates that renewable energy solutions can be effectively applied in the maritime sector, which has traditionally been synonymous with fossil fuel use. John emphasised that the project serves as tangible proof of renewable energy’s capability to support business operations while driving decarbonisation.
