Pertamina Leads SAF Development for the Future of ASEAN Aviation

PT Pertamina Patra Niaga has reinforced its leadership in developing a Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) ecosystem in Indonesia through its participation in the ASEAN SAF Workshop 2026. The event, organised by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation at the Ministry of Transportation together with the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA), was held at the Sheraton Bali Kuta Resort in Denpasar, Bali, from 13 to 15 July 2026. The forum served as a collaborative platform for ASEAN nations to accelerate the implementation of SAF as a decarbonisation solution for the aviation sector. The Director of Airworthiness and Aircraft Operations at the Ministry of Transportation, Sokhib Al Rokhman, expressed appreciation for Pertamina’s commitment to building the SAF ecosystem in Indonesia. He noted that Pertamina’s collaboration with stakeholders is a strategic step in accelerating the transition to low-emission aviation while strengthening the competitiveness of the national aviation industry. He affirmed that the Ministry of Transportation continues to encourage SAF development and implementation through regulatory strengthening and cross-sector collaboration. The availability of Pertamina’s SAF, which meets international standards, is a crucial foundation for accelerating aviation decarbonisation and solidifying Indonesia’s role as a driving force for SAF development in the region. Vice President of Aviation Fuel Business at PT Pertamina Patra Niaga, Yosep Iswadi, stated that the workshop was an important momentum to strengthen synergy for SAF development in ASEAN. He explained that Pertamina has built an integrated SAF ecosystem from upstream to downstream through cross-sector collaboration. CORSIA-certified SAF, produced at the Green Refinery RU IV in Cilacap, is now being distributed at Soekarno-Hatta Airport and I Gusti Ngurah Rai Airport, demonstrating Pertamina’s readiness to supply international-standard aviation fuel to support aviation decarbonisation and strengthen Indonesia’s position as a regional SAF development hub. During the event, Pertamina introduced its integrated end-to-end SAF ecosystem as part of its strategy to support the Net Zero Emission 2060 target or sooner. An interactive booth showcased the entire SAF value chain, from the collection of used cooking oil through the UCOllect programme, to the co-processing production at the Cilacap Green Refinery, and finally to distribution and refuelling for airlines. The development of SAF by Pertamina has yielded tangible results, with 47 UCOllect points currently operating, over 116,000 litres of used cooking oil collected, and more than 5,200 households participating. The resulting SAF can reduce emissions by up to 84 percent compared to conventional aviation fuel. Vice President of Corporate Communication at PT Pertamina Patra Niaga, Kitty Andhora, said that SAF development demonstrates Pertamina’s commitment to providing low-carbon energy solutions while strengthening national energy security. She added that Pertamina Patra Niaga continues to promote the integrated development of the SAF ecosystem through collaboration with various stakeholders. The company’s presence at the ASEAN SAF Workshop reaffirms its commitment to supporting aviation decarbonisation, strengthening Indonesia’s position as a regional SAF driver, and delivering sustainable energy innovations that benefit society and the environment. She noted that SAF development shows how the energy transition can align with the implementation of a circular economy by utilising used cooking oil as a clean energy feedstock. Collaboration between the government, industry, and the public is key to accelerating SAF adoption and reinforcing Indonesia’s position as a centre for sustainable aviation energy development in the ASEAN region.
