PT Pertamina (Persero) through Pertamina Patra Niaga, via its Aviation Fuel Terminal (AFT) Sultan Mahmud Badaruddin II unit, has launched a Corporate Social and Environmental Responsibility (TJSL) programme to restore social and environmental conditions in the Talang Jambe and Talang Betutu neighbourhoods of Palembang.

Since the 1970s, the area has been a site of clay extraction, leaving approximately 105 hectares of former mining land. This has led to waste accumulation, flooding, and landslide risks that threaten community safety and living conditions. Through an integrated TJSL approach, Pertamina Patra Niaga’s Sumbagsel Regional office is driving the transformation of the area into a more productive and sustainable space.

The programme is designed around four main pillars, realised through the Permata, Pesona, Perkasa, and Pelangi subprogrammes. This initiative also serves as the flagship programme for Pertamina’s assessment under the Ministry of Environment’s PROPER Gold rating scheme, demonstrating the company’s commitment to achieving superior and sustainable environmental and social performance.

Through the Permata programme, 0.42 hectares of former mining land has been utilised for community economic activities, including the development of solar-powered floating fish cages. As a result, brick artisans’ income has increased by 25% and women farmers’ group income has risen by 133%.

The Pesona programme focuses on managing organic and inorganic waste, achieving an 85% household waste management rate, equivalent to approximately 3,600 kg per month. One innovation developed is the processing of used cooking oil and waste into fish feed, managed by local UMKM groups.

Roberth M. V. Dumatubun, Corporate Secretary of Pertamina Patra Niaga, stated that this TJSL programme is part of the company’s commitment to creating shared value for communities and the environment. “Through a structured and sustainable TJSL programme, Pertamina Patra Niaga seeks to offer real solutions to the social and environmental challenges facing our operational areas. This approach not only restores environmental function but also creates new economic opportunities and strengthens community resilience,” Roberth said.

With an integrated approach and cross-unit replication, Pertamina Patra Niaga hopes that former mining areas and other operational regions can transform into productive, safe, and sustainable spaces for current and future generations.
