Pertamina Introduces AI System to Monitor Biodiversity
Amidst the increasing demand for transparency, reporting accuracy, and the implementation of Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles, PT Pertamina (Persero), through the Pertamina Foundation, has introduced an innovation in biodiversity monitoring based on artificial intelligence (AI) named PF-Lestarium.
Supported by AI technology and spatial analysis, PF-Lestari is capable of measuring vegetation health indices, detecting changes in land cover, and performing tree counts. The platform also features precision mapping that allows users to observe land cover profiles and topography more comprehensively. With these various features, PF-Lestari facilitates the digital inventory of plant species, maintenance history, and the initial mapping of potential carbon absorption in planting areas.
Agus added that the PF-Lestari innovation arose from the challenges of decentralised biodiversity data management and the difficulty of obtaining regular visualisations of actual conditions. “Through PF-Lestari, we are integrating the monitoring, analysis, and reporting processes to ensure they run more efficiently and accurately. Currently, PF-Lestari has been implemented in various areas of the Hutan Lestari programme managed by PF to support the rehabilitation of critical lands in Special Purpose Forest Areas (KHDTK),” said President Director of Pertamina Foundation, Agus Mashud S. Asngari, in a press release on Monday (6/7/2026).
With its existing technology, PF-Lestari supports the data collection of endemic tree planting and multi-purpose tree species (MPTS), while simultaneously strengthening forestry research and education functions. PF-Lestari also features an integrated dashboard that enables more efficient field data management, survival rate estimation, and carbon reserve potential, making the programme evaluation process more measurable and accountable.
“The potential for PF-Lestari to generate Value Creation is Rp2.19 billion, supported by internal replication, expansion to the Pertamina Group, and external commercialisation,” said Agus.
The PF-Lestari innovation was recognised at the 2026 Annual Pertamina Quality Award (APQA), achieving a Platinum predicate in the PC-Prove category. The APQ Awards is an annual event held since 2010 to honour the implementation of Quality, specifically the 4 Pillars of Quality Management within PT Pertamina (Persero).
“This is the first time the Pertamina Foundation has participated in the APQA and has immediately succeeded in achieving the Platinum predicate. This achievement serves as proof that the innovations we develop meet high-quality standards, and provides great motivation for us to continue innovating in support of more accountable and sustainable environmental programmes,” Agus concluded.
Through the utilisation of PF-Lestari, environmental preservation initiatives are expected to become stronger from the planning to the reporting stages. This documented data aligns with the Asta Cita regarding the strengthening of environmental resilience, as well as supporting the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) points 13 (Climate Action), 14 (Life Below Water), and 15 (Life on Land).
