Pertamina introduces AI-based biodiversity monitoring
Pertamina Foundation has introduced an innovation called PF-Lestari, a biodiversity monitoring system powered by artificial intelligence (AI).
Agus Mashud S Asngari, President Director of Pertamina Foundation, stated in Jakarta on Monday that PF-Lestari is supported by AI technology and spatial analysis, enabling it to measure vegetation health indices, detect land cover changes, and estimate tree counts. “Amid the growing need for transparency, reporting accuracy, and the implementation of environmental, social, and governance (ESG) principles, Pertamina Foundation presents an AI-based biodiversity monitoring system innovation named PF-Lestari,” he said.
Agus added that the platform is also equipped with precision mapping features, allowing users to observe land cover profiles and topography more comprehensively. With these features, PF-Lestari can facilitate the digital inventory of plant species, maintenance history, and the mapping of initial carbon sequestration potential in planting areas.
Agus noted that the PF-Lestari innovation arose from the challenges of decentralised biodiversity data management and the difficulty of obtaining regular visualisations of actual conditions. “Through PF-Lestari, we integrate the monitoring, analysis, and reporting processes to run more efficiently and accurately,” he said.
According to Agus, PF-Lestari has currently been implemented in various sustainable forest programme areas managed to support the rehabilitation of critical land in forest areas with special purposes (KHDTK). With its technology, PF-Lestari supports the data collection of endemic tree planting and multi-purpose tree species (MPTS), while strengthening forestry research and education functions.
PF-Lestari also features an integrated dashboard that enables more efficient field data management, estimation of survival rates, and carbon stock potential, as well as a more measurable and accountable programme evaluation process. “The potential for PF-Lestari to generate value creation is Rp2.19 billion, supported by internal replication, expansion to the Pertamina Group, and external commercialisation,” Agus stated.
The PF-Lestari innovation was recognised at the Annual Pertamina Quality Award (APQA) 2026, achieving the Platinum predicate in the PC-Prove category. This marks the first time Pertamina Foundation has participated in APQA and directly secured the Platinum predicate. This achievement serves as proof that the developed innovation meets high-quality standards, while motivating continued innovation to support more accountable and sustainable environmental programmes.
Through the utilisation of PF-Lestari, environmental conservation initiatives are expected to be strengthened from planning through to reporting. Agus added that the documented data also aligns with the national priorities related to strengthening environmental resilience and supports the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
