Pertamina International Shipping Equips Teachers to Protect Indonesia's Seas

For coastal children, the sea is not merely a school subject but a living space that will shape their future. However, in coastal school classrooms, lessons about the sea have often been limited to textbook images or brief chalkboard explanations.

Recognising this, PT Pertamina International Shipping (PIS) launched the Ocean LiteraSEA programme through an Empathetic Teachers and Interactive Learning Workshop held on Wednesday, 13 May 2026 at the Faculty of Education, Indonesia University of Education. The training encourages coastal school teachers to impart not only knowledge about the sea but also foster early awareness of marine ecosystem sustainability among young generations.

Forty teachers from 20 coastal schools participated in the Ocean LiteraSEA programme, engaging in interactive training and receiving materials on marine ecosystems and empathetic, sustainable teaching methods. Ocean LiteraSEA is part of PIS’s BerSEAnergi TJSL initiative under the Advancing Education pillar, reflecting the company’s commitment to providing quality education for coastal communities while preserving Indonesia’s marine sustainability.

For this training programme, PIS collaborated with Inovasi Muda, Indonesia University of Education, the Vocational Education Quality Assurance Centre for Marine Affairs, Fisheries, Information Technology, and Communications (BPPMVP KPTK), the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries, and the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education.

‘This literacy programme is highly beneficial for our school,’ said Ahmad Jujuli, a teacher at SMK Negeri 4 Cilegon and a participant in the training. ‘We will integrate these materials into our lessons for the students—all for their progress,’ he added.

SMK Negeri 4 Cilegon, Ahmad continued, is fortunate to be near the sea with great potential. ‘Especially to maintain a healthier and more beautiful marine ecosystem,’ he said.

Yulita Irani, a teacher at SLB Negeri 8 Jakarta, echoed these sentiments. She expressed delight at learning marine literacy, stating, ‘I can pass on the knowledge I’ve gained here to the children, who will then understand the marine environment in their daily lives.’

PIS Acting Corporate Secretary Vega Pita stated that as a company whose business grows and operates at sea, PIS believes safeguarding the ocean requires more than responsible operations—it also needs education for sustainable future. ‘Through Ocean LiteraSEA, we aim to instil in coastal youth the awareness that the sea is a shared future that must be protected,’ she said.

The initiative forms part of PIS’s contribution to the United Nations’ global sustainable development agenda, specifically SDGs 4 (Quality Education), 13 (Climate Action), and 14 (Life Below Water). It also aligns with the government’s push for blue economy development, which places marine ecosystem sustainability at the foundation of economic growth and coastal community welfare.

‘Through collaboration with various stakeholders, we hope this programme will create a lasting impact, with teachers acting as catalysts for a generation more concerned about the sea and environment,’ she said.
