Pertamina Hulu Rokan Sees Potential to Add 2,000 Bpd Production
PT Pertamina Hulu Rokan (PHR) has recorded an initial production potential of 2,035 barrels of oil per day (BOPD) from the Menggala South-21 well in the Rokan Working Area. Based on initial production tests, the well has a zero per cent water cut, indicating excellent oil quality.
General Manager of Rokan Zone, Andre Wijanarko, stated that the success of the Menggala South-21 well demonstrates that existing fields in the Rokan Block still hold significant production potential. “This achievement is the result of the hard work of the entire team, who were able to execute the drilling programme safely, efficiently, and with quality, thereby providing a significant additional production potential for the company and the state,” Andre said in a written statement on Friday, 24 July 2026.
The Menggala South-21 well is a directional infill well targeting the Menggala Formation reservoir at a depth of approximately 4,146 feet. Drilling commenced in June 2026 and was completed on 19 July 2026. Andre noted that during drilling, PHR faced several technical challenges, including a long open hole section, potential shale sloughing, loss circulation, fault crossing, and the risk of differential sticking in the production interval. Despite these challenges, the company completed the work through precise planning and execution.
PHR completed the drilling of the well 9 per cent faster than planned and recorded a cost efficiency of 44 per cent. The operation, which utilised the 550 HP Electric Rig GW-337, was also completed without any work safety incidents. Andre said these results strengthen the prospects for field development in the Menggala area and its surroundings. PHR will continue subsurface evaluation and development optimisation to support the increase in national oil production.
PT Pertamina Hulu Rokan is a subsidiary of PT Pertamina Hulu Energi (PHE) that has managed the Rokan Working Area since 9 August 2021. The working area, covering approximately 6,200 square kilometres across seven regencies and cities in Riau Province, includes 80 active fields, around 11,300 wells, and 35 gathering stations. Currently, the Rokan Zone contributes roughly a quarter of national crude oil production or a third of Pertamina’s total oil output.
