Pertamina Expands Low-Carbon Business Opportunities through Battery Ecosystem Development
PT Pertamina (Persero) is expanding its low-carbon business development opportunities through a synergy with PT Industri Batercap Indonesia (IBC) in the development of an integrated battery industry ecosystem. This exploration is part of the implementation of Pertamina’s Dual Growth Strategy, which aims to strengthen existing businesses while developing new growth sources to support national energy transition and resilience.
This step was marked by the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) regarding the Synergy for the Development of an Integrated Battery Industry Ecosystem at the PT Contemporary Amperex Technology Indonesia Battery (CATIB) facility in Karawang, West Java, on Monday, 31 August 2026.
SVP of Technology Innovation & Implementation at Pertamina, Hana Timoti, stated that the synergy with IBC opens opportunities for Pertamina to expand its business portfolio, particularly in the development of Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) and various supporting technologies for the battery ecosystem.
“The battery ecosystem and electric vehicles are one of the pillars of Pertamina’s Dual Growth Strategy. We see significant opportunities for commercialisation, ranging from the development of Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), battery recycling, the development of future battery industries, to the optimisation of integrated battery research and laboratory facilities,” said Hana.
According to Hana, the understanding with IBC serves as an initial step to explore the utilisation of the competencies and capabilities of both companies in the development of battery materials and ecosystems. This exploration is directed towards identifying technological development opportunities as well as business potentials that possess commercial feasibility and can be followed up towards implementation.
One of the opportunities to be further explored is BESS, in the form of both Portable Power Stations and Stationary Power Stations. The potential development of BESS could serve as part of an energy storage solution while opening business opportunities for Pertamina within the future energy value chain.
In addition to BESS, other areas of exploration include the development of future battery technologies, the management of used batteries through recycling and reuse, and the potential use of Pertamina’s oil and gas derivative materials to support the battery supply chain.
IBC’s Director of Business Development, Niko Chandra, stated that the exploration with Pertamina is expected to expand the utilisation of the growing battery industry capabilities in Indonesia.
“The signing of this MoU is a very important strategic step for IBC. Collaboration with Pertamina opens great opportunities to integrate the strengths of two national companies in building a robust and sustainable battery ecosystem. We believe this synergy will provide a real contribution to accelerating Indonesia’s energy transition while strengthening Indonesia’s position on the global battery industry map,” said Niko.
