PT Pertamina EP has successfully monetised natural gas from the Sengeti Field in Jambi, marking the first gas sale from Field Jambi in nearly a decade. This strategic move aims to optimise stranded gas potential while strengthening national energy security and opening new investment opportunities in Jambi Province. The Sengeti Field holds reserves of 14.76 billion standard cubic feet (BSCF), with a contracted sales volume of approximately 13.4 BSCF planned for distribution over seven years. Following a selection process, PT Perusahaan Gas Negara (Persero) Tbk was appointed as the buyer after meeting the established evaluation criteria. The gross sales value is estimated to reach around Rp 1.6 trillion over the contract period, contributing to the economy through oil and gas profit-sharing mechanisms, taxes, and applicable fiscal provisions. General Manager of Pertamina Hulu Rokan Zone 1, Mefredi, stated that beyond generating economic value, the project serves as a pilot for stranded gas development in Field Jambi. It also provides a reference for accelerating the commercialisation of other gas fields, including Sungai Gelam, Puspa, Puspa Asri, Simpang Tuan, and Meruap. The project is expected to create a domino effect on the economy by boosting investment, absorbing local labour, and fostering business opportunities for micro, small, and medium enterprises around the operational area, particularly during the construction and operational phases. The local government is also involved through coordination on permits, spatial planning compliance, and synchronisation with regional development programmes. Mefredi noted that the success of the Sengeti monetisation marks the beginning of Pertamina EP’s long-term strategy to develop stranded gas in Jambi. The company is currently accelerating the commercialisation of other fields, including Sungai Gelam, which is awaiting allocation and price determination, and Puspa and Puspa Asri, for which applications have been submitted to the Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources. Rahmat Keslani, Senior Manager Commercial Regional 1 of PT Pertamina Hulu Rokan, added that the success opens opportunities for developing a gas ecosystem in Jambi Province, potentially attracting gas-based industries and energy infrastructure development. To support the national energy self-sufficiency programme, gas from the Sengeti Field will be utilised by PT Perusahaan Gas Negara to meet the needs of industrial customers and power plants, including those in Batam and other strategic sectors.
