Pertamina EP Monetises Sengeti Gas Field with 14.76 BSCF Reserves

Pertamina EP Jambi has successfully monetised natural gas from the Sengeti Field in Muaro Jambi Regency, which holds reserves of 14.76 billion standard cubic feet (BSCF). This move is expected to boost energy security and investment in Jambi Province going forward, according to Pertamina Hulu Rokan Zona 1 General Manager Mefredi. “This project marks the first gas sale from the Jambi Field in nearly a decade. This success also signals the start of optimising stranded gas potential that has not been fully utilised due to limited market access and infrastructure,” he explained. Mefredi stated that the commercialisation of the Sengeti Field holds strategic significance for Pertamina EP. Beyond generating economic value, the project serves as a pilot for developing stranded gas in the Jambi Field. The success provides a reference for accelerating the commercialisation of other gas fields, such as Sungai Gelam, Puspa, Puspa Asri, Simpang Tuan, and Meruap. The Sengeti Field has a sales contract volume of approximately 13.4 BSCF, planned for distribution over seven years. Following a selection process, PT Perusahaan Gas Negara (Persero) Tbk (PGN) was appointed as the buyer after meeting the specified evaluation criteria. Mefredi said the gross revenue from gas sales at Sengeti is estimated to reach around Rp1.6 trillion over the contract period. This value will contribute to the economy through oil and gas profit-sharing mechanisms, taxes, and other applicable fiscal provisions. He explained that the experience gained, from technical maturation and commercialisation scheme planning to market intelligence, buyer selection, and the application for allocation and price determination to the Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources via SKK Migas, is expected to serve as a key lesson in accelerating the development of previously untapped gas potential. From a regional perspective, the Sengeti project is expected to create a domino effect on the economy through increased investment, local employment, and business opportunities for MSMEs around the operational area, particularly during the construction and operational phases. The local government is also involved in the project’s development through coordination on permits, spatial planning compliance, and synchronisation with regional development programmes. Senior Manager Commercial Region 1 of PT Pertamina Hulu Rokan, Rahmat Keslani, added that the success of the Sengeti Field opens up opportunities for developing a gas ecosystem in Jambi Province. He noted that the more gas fields successfully commercialised, the greater the opportunity for gas-based industries and energy infrastructure development, which can enhance regional competitiveness. In support of the national energy self-sufficiency programme, gas from the Sengeti Field is utilised by PGN to meet the needs of industrial customers and power plants, including in the Batam area and other strategic sectors. The company is currently accelerating the commercialisation process for several other fields. These include the Sungai Gelam Field, which is awaiting allocation and price determination as well as a tie-in permit, and the Puspa and Puspa Asri fields, which are in the process of applying for allocation and price determination. Meanwhile, the Simpang Tuan Field is still in the technical and economic maturation stage.
